METER GUIDE · 9/8

Feel the energy of 2 + 2 + 2 + 3

Nine eighth-note subdivisions become easy to follow when they are grouped as three short pairs and one longer group. Fiiz makes that structure visible and playable.

How to count 9/8

Say “one-two, one-two, one-two, one-two-three.” Emphasize the first sound in every group. The final three-part group gives the rhythm its lift before the next bar returns.

Practice method

  1. Lower the player to about 80–90 BPM.
  2. Clap only at the start of each group.
  3. Tap the remaining subdivisions quietly.
  4. Add a short musical phrase that begins on the first group.
  5. Increase the tempo in steps of two or three BPM.

Use the backing rhythm as a partner

Keep the loop running while you repeat one phrase. If you lose the bar, stop playing and continue listening until the final group of three becomes clear. Re-enter on the next first accent instead of chasing the beat.

The long final group is your landmark. Hear it as a complete gesture, not as an extra note added to the end.
