METER GUIDE · 6/8

A rolling pulse in two groups of three

6/8 contains six eighth-note subdivisions, but musicians often feel it as two broad beats: ONE-two-three, FOUR-five-six. That rolling motion suits ballads, folk melodies, and flowing accompaniment.

How to feel 6/8

Instead of treating every eighth note as a heavy beat, listen for two main pulses. The first subdivision of each group is accented, while the next two complete the motion. Say “ONE two three, FOUR five six” and gently sway on one and four.

Practice method

  1. Start the loop at a comfortable tempo.
  2. Clap only on counts one and four.
  3. Add your melody while keeping those two anchor points.
  4. Experiment with quieter notes between the main pulses.

From slow to flowing

At slower tempos, 6/8 can feel spacious and expressive. As the tempo rises, the same grouping becomes more fluid. Fiiz lets you change BPM without changing the underlying pattern, so you can hear how feel changes while meter stays constant.

If six separate counts feel mechanical, reduce them to two large movements: “ONE-and-a, TWO-and-a.”
